Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy

Amy C. Andrews, Registered Craniosacral Therapist®

Experience peace beyond relaxation.

‘The Breath of Life comes into the body. We can sense various rhythms that are created from it and we can perceive that process taking place…Essentially what’s happening is genesis. It never stops. Moment to moment we are building new form and function. ‘….For in that continual creation there is the continual and immediate potential for health, order and change.’"
- Franklyn Sills, Craniosacral Biodynamics, Vol. One, 2001

The craniosacral system was discovered around the turn of the 20th century by an American osteopath named William Garner Sutherland. While studying the sutures of the cranium, he concluded that these bones were designed to "breathe" and move. Further investigation revealed that underlying the more obvious body rhythms such as respiration, peristalsis and heartbeat, lay a more subtle pulsation. This pulsation expressed itself as a system in its own right.

The craniosacral system is made of the central nervous system, cerebrospinal fluid, dural membranes, and the bones of the cranium, spine and sacrum. The craniosacral system seems to function as an ordering principle within the body, underlying the integrity of all the other systems of the body. Restrictions, whether within this system or elsewhere in the body, disturb the craniosacral motions and diminish our sense of well-being and eventually lead to ill health.

Dr. Sutherland saw the craniosacral system as containing our primary life force, which he called the "Breath of Life." The fluctuation of the cerebrospinal fluid within the dural membranes takes up the vital energy or potency of the Breath of Life, distributing it to the rest of the body. This means the craniosacral system represents a bridge between anatomy, physiology and pure energy medicine.

The trained biodynamic craniosacral therapist (RCST) may detect disturbances in the craniosacral motion and is able to form an image of underlying trauma patterns. Listening to the client’s system, the trained therapist acts as a witness and facilitator for a resolution of inertial patterns. This is all done using a gentle touch and without "doing" anything to the client’s system. There is no predetermined treatment protocol, the work honors and listens to the body’s intrinsic healing plan.

A session may feel like a relaxing, recharging, renewing experience of peaceful rest and deep quiet. The mind/body is encouraged to tell its own story so that inert forces held in tissues may discharge in a safe, secure and therapeutic environment. Great care is taken to be sure that there is safety and comfort in the relationship of the session and the work.

With its roots in osteopathy, biodynamic cranial work includes energetic and emotional dimensions that give this modality an important role to play in the emerging paradigm of body/mind medicine. Biodynamic cranial work encourages the system to tell its own story, and to unfold its potential for health, order and change.

Biodynamic craniosacral therapy is so gentle that it is suitable for babies, children, the elderly, as well as adults, and also for people in fragile or acutely painful conditions. Sometimes the benefits of this work are not noticeable right away. As a whole body therapy, treatment may aid almost every condition, raising vitality and enabling the body’s own healing process to be utilized.

" In a biodynamic viewpoint of work in the cranial field, the Breath of Life is seen to be the primary mover and organizer of the human system. Awareness and appreciation of its manifestation become the heart of clinical work. In this understanding, the unfoldment of the human system is perceived to be holistic and dynamic.” - James Jealous, D.O.
